Weipa Town Authority elected members adopted the 2026 - 2030 Animal Management Strategic Plan on 10th December 2025. The 4-year strategic plan incorporates feedback collected from the community, including from pet owners and non-pet owners, with the goal to create harmonious co-existence between people, pets and places.

Overview

The 2026 - 2030 Animal Management Strategic Plan provides the framework for the delivery of animal management services and initiatives to our Weipa community over the next 4 years.

The plan is guided by the Queensland Government Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and the Weipa Town Authority Local Law and Subordinate Local Law No. 2.

Weipa Town Authority acknowledges that our community is dynamic and the needs, challenges and opportunities in animal management will continue to grow and evolve. The 2026 - 2030 Animal Management Strategic Plan will be evaluated annually to ensure it meets legislative requirements and is reflective of the community needs.

Purpose

To identify our objectives and to prioritise what is important, Weipa Town Authority has developed key priorities to guide the new plan:

  • Enhanced enforcement focused on:
    - Unregistered animals
    - Wandering dogs
    - Aggressive dogs
    - Excessive barking
  • educated and informed community members
  • happy healthy pets
  • safe and inclusive places.

These objectives will assist Weipa Town Authority in being responsive to the evolving needs and expectations of the community.

The purpose of the plan is to:

  • Empower responsible pet ownership through education
  • provide service excellence in animal management
  • ensure places and spaces are safe, sustainable, accessible and environmentally friendly
  • build capacity for WTA and the community to work together
  • guide and strengthen partnerships with CAPS, Local Veterinary and the RSPCA
