On Sunday 26th January 2020, Australians all around the country will gather together to celebrate what’s great about Australia.

We would like you to help us celebrate what’s great about our community by nominating someone you know for an Australia Day Award.

The Weipa Australia Day Awards will recognise members of our community who have made an outstanding contribution to the community and for exceptional achievement in the area of sport.

The award categories that you can nominate in are:

Category Criteria

Citizen of the Year

Outstanding contribution or achievement by an individual aged 22 years and over on 26 January 2020.

The winner will be an inspirational role model and display continued excellence in their field and in the community.

Young Citizen of the Year

Outstanding achievement by an individual aged 21 years or younger on 26 January 2020.

The winner will be an inspirational role model and display continued excellence in their field and in the community.

Community Event of the Year

Outstanding achievement by a group or organisation that has shown significant contribution toward developing a more socially cohesive community within the region.

* Nominated events must have been held in Weipa or surrounding area during the calendar year of 2019

Australia Day Sportsperson of the Year

Outstanding achievement by an individual or group that has made a significant contribution towards the sporting or recreational achievements of the region.

Australia Day Junior Sportsperson of the Year

Outstanding achievement by an individual or group that has made a significant contribution towards the sporting or recreational achievements of the region.

* All Nominees must be a resident of Weipa at the time of nomination

How to Nominate:
Please complete the online form by on the closing date of Friday 10th January 2020.

Supporting documentation may also be provided with your nomination form that you feel will assist the judges in making their decision. Supporting documentation can include items such as personal references, photographs, samples of work, portfolios, articles etc.

Please do not supply originals of supporting documentation as all documentation will be retained by WTA.

Selection Criteria
Please consider the selection criteria listed below when completing your nomination.

  • How has the person/event made an outstanding contribution to the local community?
  • How is the person an inspirational role model for the community?
  • Why do you believe that this person/event should receive an Australia Day Award?
  • What makes this person/ event stand out from others?

Judging Process
Nominations will be reviewed by the appointed judging panel. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Award recipients
Award recipients will be announced at a ceremony during our Australia Day celebrations on Sunday 26th January 2020.
