Weipa's 50th Anniversary Commemoration Celebrations Weipa's 50th Anniversary Commemoration Celebrations

Over a weekend in July, the WTA team had their hands full hosting a three day event to celebrate 50 years since Weipa was officially opened as a town.

Weipa was officially opened on 2nd June 1967 by the Premier of QLD, Hon G.F.R (Frank) Nicklin.

In early 2016, the WTA council members passed a resolution to celebrate this important milestone in 2017.

Planning began and no one could predict what a huge weekend it was going to be. Word quickly spread through social media and word of mouth which resulted in ex residents and managers making the trek from all over Australia to participate in the celebrations.

The weekend started with a casual get together in the newly re-furbished Hibberd Library for a social reunion between old and new friends on the Friday evening. Guests were treated to live entertainment by ex-manager Ken McDonald who had made the trip from Victoria for the weekend.

Saturday was a jam packed day with free historical bus tours operating hourly from 10am – 2pm with local historian and ex-resident  Geoff Wharton. These tours proved very popular and all spots on the tours were quickly taken.
The annual Rio Tinto’s GM’s XI versus Weipa Town Cricket Match  resulting in Weipa Town taking the trophy again. The day was finished off with a Gala Dinner held at the Albatross Bay Resort with @180 people attending including Peter Evans (son of Harry Evans) who had come all the way from Victoria to celebrate 50 years with the community.

Sunday saw the festivities come to a conclusion with the Community Festival held in Kumrumja Park from 2pm onwards. This was a family friendly alcohol free event which saw the judging of the entries of the Arts, Craft and Performing Arts competition, community markets, sausage sizzles, live entertainment by local band “The Other Band” and special guest Mr John Williamson.

The evening finished with a bang with one of the best fireworks displays Weipa has seen.

Overall the weekend was enjoyed by the whole community and everyone involved.

The WTA would like to thank the sponsors, staff and volunteers who made this event possible and all those who travelled from all over to celebrate this exciting milestone.
